About
Bordeaux, the world's wine capital, is one of the most attractive student cities in France. The academic ecosystem is built around the Université de Bordeaux (formed in 2014 by merging Bordeaux 1, 2 and 4, covering sciences, health, law and economics), Bordeaux Montaigne for humanities, Sciences Po Bordeaux, Kedge Business School, Bordeaux INP (engineering) and the École nationale supérieure d'architecture et de paysage. Over 100,000 students bring the metropolis to life.
The 18th-century historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the largest in Europe. The Place de la Bourse with its iconic Miroir d'eau (water mirror), the renovated quays, Saint-André Cathedral and the pale-stone façades give the city instant elegance. A silent modern tram, pedestrian streets and the Garonne river shape a remarkably pleasant daily life.
The oceanic climate stays mild year-round, the Atlantic Ocean is one hour away (Arcachon, Cap Ferret, Lacanau for surfing) and the Saint-Émilion and Médoc vineyards are a short ride away. Bordeaux is pricier than Toulouse but still much cheaper than Paris, with one of the best quality-of-life ratings in France.

Housing
The housing market is tight: Bordeaux attracts more students, newcomers and Parisian remote workers every year, and rents have risen sharply. Start your search in June or July for a September arrival. Expect €400-600/month for a room in a shared flat or a small studio in the outskirts, more in the hypercentre.
The CROUS Bordeaux offers rooms at €200-400/month on the Talence, Pessac and Gradignan campuses, with priority for Erasmus students through bilateral agreements. Private student residences (Studéa, Néméa, Ecla, Suitétudes) range from €500 to €800 all-inclusive. For the open market, use Leboncoin, PAP, Studapart, Erasmus Play, Beroomie and Bordeaux Facebook flatshare groups. APL housing aid from CAF is accessible and can cover €100-200/month.
Key neighbourhoods: Saint-Michel / Capucins (student, alternative, food markets), Chartrons (chic, central, the old wine-traders' district), Saint-Pierre (touristy old town, pricier), Caudéran / Nansouty (residential, quiet, more affordable), Bastide (right bank, young and rapidly changing), Talence / Pessac / Gradignan (campus belt, softer rents, direct tram).
Transport
The TBM network (Transports Bordeaux Métropole) covers the whole metropolis with 4 tram lines (A, B, C, D), a wide bus network and the Bat³ river shuttles on the Garonne, all included in the pass. Trams run from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. (later on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights).
The Pass Jeune Mensuel for under-28s costs about €25/month (versus nearly €50 for adults) — clearly the deal to aim for. The VCub bike-share scheme and electric scooters round out the offer: Bordeaux is very flat and ideal for riding. Bordeaux-Mérignac airport (BOD) is linked to the centre by the 30'Direct shuttle (about 30 minutes, €8); the Tram A extension to the airport has been running since 2026.
Student life
ESN Bordeaux is one of France's most active sections: welcome week, weekly international parties, trips (Arcachon, Basque Country, Pyrenees) and above all château visits in the Médoc and Saint-Émilion (30-45 minutes away), the true local signature. Bordeaux Fête le Vin lights up the quays every other June. Markets (Marché des Capucins on weekends, Marché Royal) and the summer guinguettes along the Garonne shape the local rhythm.
Nightlife centres on Place de la Victoire (lively student square), the Quays and Saint-Pierre district (wine bars, cocktails), the Bastide right bank (clubs, venues like Rock School Barbey) and the barges moored along the Garonne in summer. Don't miss the local specialties: cannelés, entrecôte bordelaise with red wine sauce, Arcachon oysters and duck magret from the Landes.
Weekends and trips: Arcachon and the legendary Dune du Pilat are 1h by train, Biarritz and the French Basque Country 2h, Toulouse 2h, San Sebastián in Spain 3h and Paris 2h by TGV. A perfect base to explore South-West France and northern Spain.
Paperwork & admin
Procedures are standard French. Upon arrival, open a CAF file for APL housing aid: you'll need a French IBAN, a rent certificate, your passport and a provisional social security number. Register with French health insurance via Ameli.fr to get a Carte Vitale or temporary certificate (the European EHIC covers the first months for EU students).
Open a French bank account (BNP, LCL, Société Générale, or online Boursorama, Revolut, N26) — needed for direct debits (rent, transport pass) and required by CAF. Non-EU students must validate their long-stay visa with the OFII within three months of arrival by paying the fee online. University enrolment is finalised through the ENT after submitting original documents to the international office.
Local language
French is the main language, but English works fine at Sciences Po Bordeaux and Kedge Business School, which both offer many programmes in English. At other institutions and in daily life (admin, shops, doctors), some French remains very useful.
To improve, the DEFLE at Université Bordeaux Montaigne is one of the most respected French-as-a-foreign-language centres in France, offering full semesters and evening classes. The Alliance Française de Bordeaux and France Langue also offer intensive options. ESN Bordeaux organises language tandems and weekly language cafés.
The South-West accent is soft, singsong and charming — a great setting to immerse yourself in warm, lively French.
