About

Cologne (Köln) is Germany's fourth-largest city, home to about one million people on the banks of the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia. It's a major student hub with the Universität zu Köln (Uni Köln) — one of Europe's largest universities with around 50,000 students — alongside the technical TH Köln and the renowned Deutsche Sporthochschule dedicated to sport sciences.

The city's skyline is dominated by the Kölner Dom, a UNESCO-listed gothic cathedral and one of the most-visited religious buildings in the world. Cologne has a strong local identity: Kölsch beer served in small 0.2L glasses, the world-famous Karneval in February, Rhineland traditions and unmistakable civic pride.

It's also one of Germany's most open and tolerant cities, with a historic and very visible queer-friendly scene. The weather is wet but mild, and the overall vibe is warm, festive and laid-back — an excellent setting for an immersive Erasmus.

Housing

Cologne's housing market has been tight since 2022, with strong pressure on student shared flats. Start your search at least 2 to 3 months before arrival. The German reference platform is WG-Gesucht, where most WG (shared flat) rooms are listed. Expect 500 to 700€ for a furnished room in a shared flat, sometimes more in central neighborhoods.

Student dorms run by the Kölner Studierendenwerk (KSTW) offer the best prices (around 300-450€) but spots are very limited: apply as early as possible through Uni Köln's Erasmus office. Also check Erasmus Play, Spotahome or HousingAnywhere for furnished options aimed at internationals.

Neighborhood-wise: Ehrenfeld is trendy, queer-friendly and still affordable; Sülz and Lindenthal are student-heavy near the main campus; Nippes attracts a young crowd; the Belgisches Viertel is central, hip and pricey; Mülheim, Kalk and Chorweiler in the east are noticeably cheaper. Beware of scams: never pay before visiting (or having a serious video call) and signing a Mietvertrag.

Transport

Cologne has an excellent public transport network run by KVB: Stadtbahn (light rail/metro), buses and regional links. The network covers the whole metropolitan area and runs late, with night lines on weekends.

The real deal is the Deutschland-Semesterticket: for around 29€/month effective (176.40€ per semester), it gives access to ALL regional transport in Germany — KVB, S-Bahn, RE, RB nationwide. Unbeatable for weekend trips to Hamburg, Berlin, Munich or the Black Forest. It's included or available at a discounted rate for students enrolled at Uni Köln and TH Köln.

For short trips, the KVB-Rad bike-share offers student rates. Cycling is widespread in Cologne thanks to a decent bike-lane network. Köln Hauptbahnhof, right next to the Dom, connects to Brussels in 1h45 (ICE), Frankfurt in 1h, Paris in 3h30 (Thalys) and Amsterdam in 2h45.

Student life

Student life in Cologne is highly active thanks to ESN Köln, which runs outings, trips, international parties and integration events all year. The highlight is Karneval: for several weeks between February and March, the city turns into one huge street party, from Weiberfastnacht to Rosenmontag. Costumes mandatory, Kölsch flowing freely and easy-going vibes — an unforgettable cultural experience.

Kölsch culture lives on in traditional Brauhäuser like Päffgen, Früh am Dom or Sion, where waiters (Köbes) keep refilling your glass until you cover it with a beermat. For nightlife, head to the Belgisches Viertel and Ehrenfeld: clubs like Bumann & Sohn, Heinz Gaul, Studio 672 or Gewölbe. Cologne Pride (CSD) in July is one of Europe's biggest.

On weekends, enjoy walks along the Rhine, museums (Ludwig, Schokoladenmuseum) and excellent rail links: Bonn in 20 min by S-Bahn, Düsseldorf in 30 min, Belgium in 2h, Amsterdam in 3h via Thalys or ICE.

Paperwork & admin

Anmeldung (address registration) is mandatory within 14 days of moving in, at the Bürgerbüro of your district. Appointments are booked online and fill up fast: reserve months ahead as soon as you know your arrival date. You'll then receive your Steuer-ID by mail, essential for any paid job or internship.

Non-EU students must apply for a residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde within 90 days. Statutory health insurance is mandatory to enroll at university: pick a public fund like TK, AOK or Barmer (around 120€/month for under-30s). Erasmus students can often use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as an alternative.

For banking, N26 or Revolut open in minutes and cover most needs. Otherwise, Sparkasse KölnBonn is the local go-to and accepts international students with a valid Anmeldung.

Local language

The official language is German, and although many locals speak good English, knowing some basics massively eases daily life (Bürgerbüro, doctors, contracts). The local dialect, Kölsch, is emblematic of the city's identity — you'll hear expressions like "Et hätt noch immer jot jejange" ("it always turned out fine"). You don't need to speak it, but getting its spirit helps you fit in.

Uni Köln offers many English-taught masters and courses, making studies accessible even without advanced German. To improve, take advantage of free or low-cost intensive German courses offered by the Studierendenwerk and the Sprachenzentrum at Uni Köln. Other options: F+U Academy of Languages and the VHS Köln (community college, very affordable).

ESN Köln regularly organizes language tandems to practice with German students. The international and open vibe means English will get you by everywhere — restaurants, nightlife, university admin — but investing in German remains the best way to truly live Cologne from the inside.
