About

KU Leuven, founded in 1425, is the oldest Catholic university in the world and now hosts around 60,000 students for barely 100,000 inhabitants: Leuven is literally a student city, with everything pulsing to the university's rhythm. Consistently ranked in the world top 50 (THE and QS), it stands among the most prestigious institutions in continental Europe.

Officially Flemish and Dutch-speaking, KU Leuven nonetheless offers one of the broadest English-taught course catalogues in Europe, especially at master's level (engineering, business, biomedical sciences, philosophy). The city sits just 30 minutes by train from Brussels, making it a perfect base to explore Belgium.

The historic heart is a medieval gem: the Grote Markt dominated by the flamboyant Gothic Stadhuis (town hall), the UNESCO-listed Beguinage, and the Stella Artois brewery — producing its famous pilsner here since the 14th century — make Leuven a must-see cultural stop.

Housing

The Leuven tradition is the kot — a furnished student room in a shared house. Expect around €460/month on average for a single room (shared kitchen and bathroom) and about €500 for a private studio. Yearly contracts are the norm, but monthly contracts exist for one-semester Erasmus students — make that clear from the start.

The reference platform is Kotwijs.be, the official KU Leuven-approved website that only lists properties verified for quality, safety, and contract terms. KU Leuven Residences account for around 20% of the supply and prioritise Erasmus students, but spots fill fast: apply as soon as your acceptance is confirmed via housing.kuleuven.be. Complementary options: HousingAnywhere and Erasmus Play for international listings.

Neighbourhoods: Centrum (super-central, 5 minutes' walk from the university and nightlife), Heverlee to the south (Arenberg campus for sciences and engineering, quieter and greener), and Kessel-Lo to the east (residential, family-friendly, perfect if you want calm and more space).

Transport

Leuven is small and flat: everything is done on foot or by bike. A bike is essential — buy a second-hand one for €80-100 (Facebook Marketplace, or the Velo Leuven cooperative) and lock it well with a serious lock: bike theft is extremely common in town.

For longer trips, De Lijn runs the local buses. If you're under 25, the Buzzy Pazz costs around €200/year (~€17/month), otherwise single tickets cost about €2.50. Note: most Erasmus students never take the bus — the bike is enough.

Leuven station is an excellent rail hub: SNCB trains run every 5-10 minutes to Brussels (30 min, ~€8 student return), as well as to Antwerp and Liège. Brussels-Zaventem airport (BRU) is only 20 minutes by direct train from Leuven station — a huge plus for travel.

Student life

PANGAEA is KU Leuven's International House and the gathering point for Erasmus students: weekly events, language exchange café, talks, outings — you'll meet everyone there. ESN Leuven organises trips, themed parties, and integration activities all year.

The Belgian beer culture is everywhere: Stella obviously, but also Trappist beers like La Trappe and abbey beers like Tongerlo. The must-experience spot is the Oude Markt, nicknamed the "longest bar in Europe": 200 metres of bars lined up edge to edge, with legendary vibes especially on Thursday nights (the big student night in Leuven). Local breweries like Domus Brouwerij brew their own beer on site.

Kot life (Kotleven) and Flemish student traditions like the Cantus (a codified evening of student songs) are an integral part of the experience. For weekends: Brussels (30 min), Bruges (1h15), Antwerp (45 min), and Amsterdam (2h) are all easily reachable by train.

Paperwork & admin

If you stay longer than 3 months, you must register at the Stad Leuven (municipal administration) within 8 days of arrival. Bring your passport, proof of housing, KU Leuven enrolment certificate, and health insurance proof.

Affiliation with a Belgian mutuelle (health insurance fund) is mandatory: around €60/year at the student rate (CM, Solidaris, Partena). Open a Belgian bank account (KBC, BNP Paribas Fortis, or Belfius all offer free student accounts) or use a neobank like N26 or Revolut for your first months.

Non-EU students need a student visa (type D) before arrival, then must apply for a Belgian residence card at the municipal office within 8 days. Bring several Belgian-format ID photos.

Local language

The official language of Leuven is Dutch (Flemish). But KU Leuven offers one of the broadest English-taught catalogues in Europe, especially at master's level (engineering, business, biomedical sciences, philosophy, all exact sciences).

Day to day, Flemish dominates, but English works almost everywhere: students, shopkeepers, restaurants, international admin services. You can totally do your Erasmus entirely in English without issue, but learning a few Dutch words ("dank je wel", "alstublieft") always delights locals.

To learn Dutch: the CLT (Centrum voor Levende Talen) at KU Leuven offers reputable intensive courses at student rates, and ILT (Instituut voor Levende Talen) runs more flexible evening classes. PANGAEA and ESN Leuven also organise free language tandems — the best way to progress while making local friends.
